SHABAT Vayishlah
QUESTION: What is the reason and purpose of the Mar’e Haketab?
ANSWER: The literal translation of the word is “To show the writing”. This Mitzva is described in the Shulchan Aruch Orah Chayim 133 as follows: “He will show the writing of the Sepher Torah to the people that are standing at his right and at his left and he will turn towards the front and back as it is a Mitzva for all the men and women to see the writing of the Sepher and to bow before it while saying Vezot Hatorah etc…
Although the purpose of this Mitzva is clear, the customs of the Community differ at times. Our custom is to do the Mar’e Haketab once the Sepher Torah is on the Teba and before reading it. The Sepharadim of the Middle East follow the same custom as the one in Yerushalayim. The Sepharim that they use are the ones that are enclosed in a box and are read in the upright position. Upon taking the Sepher Torah out of the Echal, the person who carries it, opens it and holds it open all the way from the Echal to the Teba. This obviously provides an opportunity for all to see the writing. Something that is somewhat more difficult to accomplish when shown only from the Teba.
The Ashkenazim do the Mar’e Haketab from the Teba as we do with the exception that this is done after the reading of the Torah.
We pray to the Almighty that He always grant us the opportunity to elevate His Torah and may it forever illuminate our life.
HALACHA CORNER Over the course of the next few months, we will be concentrating on various laws of Shabbat. The הלכות (laws) will be coming from ספר שמירת שבת כהלכתה, a well known guide to the practical observance of Shabbat. Please note, if one has heard of any discrepancies regarding the laws posted here, or has a specific personal question regarding his/her own situation in regards to Shabbat, one should ask Haham Assayag for proper guidance in the matter.
Laws of Selecting on Shabbat שמירת שבת כהלכתה: 3:16, 17, 33
Putting a piece of watermelon, containing seeds, into one’s mouth and afterwards removing the seeds from one’s mouth, in no way involves an infringement of the prohibition against selection. If one does not wish to do this, one may shake the seeds of the slice as long as it is done immediately before eating it. Those who are accustomed to remove the remainder of the seeds which are still attached to the watermelon have halachic authority to support them, provided it is done immediately before eating it.
In regards to melons such as honeydews and cantaloupes, one may extract the seeds in which they are concentrated in the center, if this is done immediately prior to the meal, or before eating it. The reason is that the seeds must be removed in order to reach the fruit.
Fruits, such as plums and peaches, which contain pits that when removed still have pieces of fruit attached to it, when eaten, one is allowed to take out the pit with his/her hand. However, pits of apricot which come away clean of fruit when removed one should either
Open it in such a way that the pit will drop out by itself or
Remove the fruit from the pit, rather than reverse.
One should note that a fruit pit which is no longer in the fruit, not fit for human or animal consumption and has no remains of fruit attached to it has the status as מוקצה (muktze).
NEXT WEEK: Removing bad parts of fruits and removing edible and inedible fruit peels

SKC PROGRAMMING Speaker & Writer-Pierre Lasry from Montreal will be speaking about his book “ Esther, A Jewish Odyssey”
Sunday November 28, 2004 at 8:00p.m.- Stayed Tuned!
ESTHER, A JEWISH ODYSSEY, retraces the itinerary of Esther Brandao as recorded in the minute book of Varin de La Mare, Harbour Police Commissioner in Quebec City, in September 1738.
ESTHER is the true story of a girl of fifteen who, in 1735 must run away from Bayonne, her city of birth, flees across France dressed as a boy, tries to reach Amsterdam, but ends up in Quebec city in 1738 after hair-raising adventures.
A JEWISH ODYSSEY is the story of the threefold transformation of Esther Brandao. How, dressed as a boy for years, Esther rediscovers her feminine side in New-France. How this New-Christian, raised in a convent, rediscovers her Jewish roots while undergoing the Inquisition in Quebec City. How, unable to love she finally learns to love.Born in Morocco, arrived in Montreal in January, 1957, during the Storm of the Century, Pierre Lasry has written and directed many best-selling, documentaries at the National Film Board of Canada.
Some of the author’s controversial films deal with: Miraculous Healing, Brainwashing in Sects, the Myths of Mental Illness, and the Scapegoat Function in society. The French version of ESTHER, A JEWISH ODYSSEY, WON THE PRESTIGIOUS J. I. SEGAL LITERATURE AWARD.

Churros for sale Since the golden Menorah had been stolen by the Syrians, the Maccabees now made one of cheaper metal. When they wanted to light it, they found only a small cruse of pure olive oil bearing the seal of the High Priest Yochanan. It was sufficient to light only for one day. By a miracle of G-d, it continued to burn for eight days, till new oil was made available. That miracle proved that G-d had again taken His people under His protection. In memory of this, our sages appointed these eight days for annual thanksgiving and for lighting candles.
